But your smile makes it all alright.
I'm so glad that you're my friend.
I know our friendship will never end."
-- Robert Alan
In my short stint on this planet, I've had the privilege of knowing a whole bunch of people. Almost everyone of them has altered me in some way, currents which have guided my life's ship such that I am here, in this place, right now, who knows for good or bad. However, there is an eclectic group of people who I'd like to call my friends, who've had more profound an effect than most others. I probably never express this often enough, given that I'm habitually, emotionally closed and distant, but friends hold a very special place in my heart. They've helped support me when times were tough, when I've been almost depressed. Leaving home was never easy the first time, but I was glad to have a strong support system in my family, and an equally strong support system in friends who've now become as close as brothers. Leaving home a second time, for the US, seemed daunting, but they, my friends, have helped make the last two years probably the most enjoyable of my life. Maybe because I have a higher sense of my own consciousness, or maybe because I'm just home-sick, but living, eating and working with the same people for the last 2 years has helped develop a bond of family and I'm proud to add these people to my extended family. Most people don't realize this, but seeing the same people everyday gives me a sense of routine, keeps me grounded, keeps me alive. My family back in Oman and India are my heart and soul, but my friends all over the world and in Pittsburgh make me feel complete with the care they show, albeit not in ways you always expect them to show it in, but I know they do care.
Now before I start rambling again, let me get down to the gist of this post. I promise to extol my friends more in future posts when I have a more over-whelming sense of sentimentality bearing down upon me. I write now to point out some characteristics which I find quirky and unique to what I call true-friends. These people share most if not all of these attributes. Sometimes some very small action on your part, unknowingly helps define your image in someone else's mind. What these people have done for me, they might not know, but i do notice (contrary to popular belief I actually know a LOT more than I let on), and it has affected me and for this I thank you.
- A true friend is one who knows what you want even before you want it.
- A true friend is one who is more worried than you about you loosing your passport and credit cards.
- A true friend is one who sits with you and helps clean out a whole year's worth of junk from your refrigerator.
- A true friend is one who agrees to do something with you just because you're so enthusiastic about it and they want to support you no matter what.
- A true friend is one who drops what they're doing aside when you need something, no matter how big or small.
- A true friend is one who doesn't mind pointing out what you're doing wrong, whose only aim is to correct you, even if it means you get angry at them.
- A true friend is one who knows when you're feeling down and glum and doesn't give up trying to make you smile.
- A true friend is one who knows where it hurts, and when everyone laughs, stands by quietly not wanting to make it worse, all the time knowing how you feel inside.
- A true friend is one who shares their Mom's home-made mithai even though they're terribly short stocked themselves.
- A true friend is one who hates crowds but still doesn't mind cooking with you for over 20 people.
- A true friend is one who knows the mithai you've made sucks, but still gives it an A+ review just cause you tried.
- A true friend is one who agrees to let you drive the car so that you can practice, even though they love driving themselves and know that you'll probably get them killed sooner or later (;))
- A true friend is one who doesn't dance, but will still dance just so you're not alone.
- A true friend is one with whom you can sit and sing songs late into the night and re-live old memories, not once glancing at your watch.
- A true friend is one who reminds you of birthdays that you'll never remember, even after you forgot his own.
- A true friend is one who will fight with you, but you're back talking the very next day as if nothing ever happened.
- A true friend is one with whom you share a passion, be it food, technology, travel or the simple things in life like a walk in the park on a nice breezy evening.
- A true friend is one whom you think of calling first whenever you're stuck at a bus-stop and need timings for the next bus.
- A true friend is one who is always willing to forgive you when you call after months, apologizing for being busy, when you were really only being lazy. On a similar note, they continue to leave you voice messages and getting in touch with you since they know you're not trying to avoid them and are just plain lazy. (You know who you all are. Never stop. Hearing your voice makes me feel like I'm back home)
- A true friend(s) is one who can make you cry, just knowing that your time with them is short at hand....
And as my eyes moisten and I feel a tear trickle down my cheek, I come to the close of this post. There are a whole list of more obvious points which hit home harder, but as always they seem so cliched. I hope this has helped everyone remember their true friends and the memories of them that they hold dear. I thank my friends again for helping make me what I am. As I lay on my bed and think of times past and hopefully of better times to come with these same individuals and hopefully many new ones just like them, I cannot help but be reminded of this often neglected poem by Henry Longfellow,
"I shot an arrow into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For so swiftly it flew, the sight
Could not follow it in its flight.
I breathed a song into the air,
It fell to earth, I knew not where;
For, who has sight so keen and strong
That it can follow the flight of song?
Long, long afterward, in an oak
I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end,
I found again in the heart of a friend."
P.S. I apologize if this post fails to hit home but the emotions it evoked while re-canting the times I've had were, over-whelming to say the least....
